Guest post from my dad:
Announcing: Beer Label Competition
Open to all Shamboteers.
Maximum three entries per person.
Deadline March 15th, 2007
Must be 21 on receipt of prize.
Homebrewers need inspiration. Also, they are very bad at/lazy about
making labels. I plan to take all entries to the Homebrew Club meeting on March 17th
to be judged by the members of the club. There will be at least one
winner. The winner’s label will be the inspiration for a beer that I
will brew. The prize is twelve bottles of that beer. Depending on their
interest in doing so, other members of the club may choose a label, brew
a beer, and surrender twelve bottles to the label’s designer. So there
could be several winners.
note: it will take a while for the beer to be produced and the prize
delivered.
Size: up to about 3.5″ high and 4″ wide. But you can be pretty flexible.
Just so it fits on a regular long neck bottle. I can deal with just
about any file format. If it’s all bitmap, a jpg of sufficiently high
resolution will be fine. If it includes vector elements, a psd file or
an illustrator file or pdf would probably be best.
Every home brewer has beer styles that they prefer to make, but most
are eager to experiment. I tend to prefer making stouts, porters, IPA’s
and pale ales, and rarely make lagers. Other members of the homebrew
club have different preferences. You can find a list of beer styles at
beeradvocate.com. Many of these styles are rare and or obscure. You
probably won’t find a taker for Apricot Rye Lambic (though it does sound
tasty). I would be happy to provide advice (through the comments)
regarding beer names or concepts. If you want to play it safe you can be
rather non-specific as regards beer style or descriptors. For example,
Whiny Puppy Ale could be a great name and generate a fun label. And the
brewer could make just about any ale to go in that bottle.
let’s get art’n!
Wind Waker is still better than Twilight Princess, i don’t care how long it is (which quite honestly wasn’t that much longer if at all)
i dont know what this is, i was bored.
Okay, so some of you know that I was in a local movie filmed in Iowa City this year. It’s… um… well lets just say I did it for the experiance and let me tell you… it was an experiance. We filmed it in a hotel room over three nights. The running joke is of course that I am with four other men in a hotel room making a movie… yup. The trailer was just uploaded and I think it explains the plot much, much better than I could ever. I hope that by watching this you’ll understand why I’ve had such a problem explaining it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP6xSllKL2w
Yes it’s coming out on DVD, no I’m not letting you people see it.
I’m telling you. Don’t do it. (more…)
My sister was looking at going to two different schools; Syracuse in New York, and Minneapolis (in Minnesota). She just got back from Syracuse but didn’t like the city or school very much, so that means that she’ll be going to Minneapolis! It’s a little selfish of me, but I’m really glad that she’s going to Minneapolis. Since I came here three years ago I’ve hardly gotten to see her at all. Now I can see her all the time!
In other news, Lindsey and I got a CD from a co-worker by the group “Adult.” pronounced “Adult Period”. Very cool if you like electronic music. Check it out the first song on their CD Anxiety Always:

hello friends!
greetings from the land of new york city. as usual, it is lovely here, if a little dirty. many, many things have happened/are going to happen soon since last i spoke to shambot. (he never calls!)
most notably, i gots me a payin’ job! at pinch sitters (did you catch the pun there? it’s very clever) a babysitting agency in the city. it’s pretty much the coolest thing ever. here’s the rundown on how it works: the woman who runs it has a bookful of clients who are “accepted” to pinch sitters–they have to go through a background check, etc before they are allowed to use the service. she (we’re going to call her M) fields all the calls for sitting jobs, then distributes them to her sitters, who email her their schedules every week. so basically, i can work whenever i want–i just let m know when is okay to call, and when’s not ok, and she emails/calls me with bookings, usually about 24 hours in advance. the client pays me directly, and then each week i turn in my timecard and the amount of money i owe m (the client pays me the full amount per hour, m gets a certain amount off the top). everything is in cash, and apparently there is plenty of work available. kind of like drug dealing, i suppose. except with babies.
so, my first booking is tonight. tomorrow, due to a very urgent book party celebration i will be hitting up with suzannah, i will not be working, but i have another booking friday night. i am very excited. and naturally, i will keep you all up to date with tales of the manhattan mini-elite (apartment on park avenue, anyone?). also, news from my first release party to come as well.
oh, and for all you who are wondering, the march issue of harper’s should be out pretty soon. check that shit! it’s a really good issue. “i was a chinese internet addict” is especially wonderful. not to mention those non-commission pieces in the readings section. damn, some art intern over there has a good eye.
ok. more soon. (oh, and seriously, i AM doing art. lots of it, in fact. but the nysp studio facilities blow so hard that a) i am never in them, because i have no f-ing studio space anyway, and b) the scanner is a piece of crap. i refuse to use it until it hooks up properly to my lappy (the computers we have are still stuck on the super old version of photoshop (the one with the eye) and i need to clean it with windex. but i’ll post photos of work soon.)
LAHVE.
ps. angie is coming out here! yay! she wins the prize of my everlasting love and affection! (oh wait, i guess she already had that. oh well.)
I haven’t made anything worth posting lately. The assignments I’ve been getting aren’t really the kind of illustrating that I really like to do. I’m still making art, so I’m very thankful for that. Here’s an invitation I made for my Illustration in Products class:
It’s an invitation for a kid’s birthday party. It originally said ‘you’re invited’ on the front, but I changed so I could make it relevant for posting. Isn’t it just the most adorable robot you’ve ever seen? BARF.
I did a rather large (for me anyway) illustration for the Made @ MCAD show. It’s about 48” by 30”. I spent a whole weekend working on it and I really like it, so I’m hoping it gets accepted. I should have taken a picture to post here, but I totally forgot!!!
In other news, I’m getting a CT scan on Friday of my pelvis area to see what the William H. Macy is wrong with me. I’ve heard it’s comfy inside the scanner thing, maybe I can get some rest while I’m in there (my scan is scheduled for 6:45 AM!!) Wish me luck!(?)
We found a puppy on the lake! He was adowabo.
Okay, since shamby went all hay-wire last night and so did emma’s camera yesterday, I have nothing from day 4 officially to show. BUT I can tell you a few things that may or may not be interesting to you. This is my last chance to brag about my new cool asociations-ness. PS: these are from the abandoned school on Saturday as well.
First of all, I know I promised pictures of the fabulous people I was working with but a) the new york W people were much too intimidating to take full-on pictures of them (because they would probably see me and think I was wierd.) and b) this isnt an accurate depiction of the people from “Team Soth,” but close enough, right? The guy on the left is Josh, a former intern of Alec’s who was getting paid for this gig, unlike me; and the guy in the back is Alec’s assistant Phil, who is hilarious. Actually both of them are hilarious, we all laughed so much this weekend despite being so exhausted all the time. The girl’s name is Stella (cute!) and we actually photographed her twice (she was THAT cute!). In this one she is basically wearing a silk garbage bag with a collar and vintage shoes. Alec is behind the camera.
Aaaaaand this is my favorite kid EVER. He was so skinny and gawky and funny-looking in his big puffy camo jacket and moose hat. His name is Stephen and he cleans up real nice, dontcha think?!?! IN A CHANEL SUIT?!?! I think so. (Also this girl on the right is Eleonore, pronounced ell-ay-uh-nore, and she is awesome. She was from casting and I am going to visit her when I am in new york this summer!!)
Okay, let’s play a game: guess the ages of the people in the pictures. It’s harder than it looks! Winner gets a virtual pat-on-the-back? Gook Luck!
