this is something ben and alli and i talk a lot about on Thursdays, when we all don’t have class:

If you live in Minneapolis, you’ve probably seen those adorable sculptures downtown on third of the little guys running around on grass mounds. I can’t find any information about them online, but they are cute. Anywho, we decided that they were called Dodoots, and now the word has become part of the Thursday vernacular (others include Martha, and Stump the Ratch). Dodoots are amazing.

You know who else is amazing? Maira Kalman! I was at the MIA today where I did some homework, got some coffee, and managed to give in and buy this GORGEOUS dish towel (don’t laugh) (also, i’m embarassed because I paid a bit more for it at the museum than it goes for online. lame). The gift shop has so many beautiful trinkets (trays. I wanted all the trays), and good books! This was where I saw Maira Kalman’s book, The Principles of Uncertainty”. Maira, apparently, has made a ton of children’s books – but most recently was making this beautiful illustrated column for the New York Times (LUCKY) that was just published into this really interesting book (MORE LUCKY). It’s mostly illustrations, with some beautiful handwritten text and lovely graphic designs. I think I need it for Christmas or something. ANYWHO, not only is it a gorgeous book, but NOW it is being made into…. wait for it… a short opera!! As an illustrator who is interested in other forms of art, I can only hope that someday I reach a point where I know people in different veins of art who I can collaborate with like Maira Kalman gets to. I suggest you watch the video (it’s what the last link goes to) if you want to be really jealous about someone else’ life. It starts off slow, but it gets better.

So there you go. In summary, Dodoots are great. I wish I was of Scandanavian ancestry. I am jealous of Maira Kalman’s life.

Coming soon: an entirely analogue (except for the part where I have to scan and put it on the computer) shambot entry!
